Vientine 8/03/2011 to 9/03/2011

My night of drinking left me with the worst hangover possible. I didn’t even hear Loon and Russell leave but in my rotten state i did venture out only to return back to bed after a short time, my head was banging hard, i felt nauseous and i had the general feeling i was going to just cash out at anytime. I stayed in bed till 4pm and only got up after Russell said food would help and an aspirin. Russell had similar symptoms as i was having now in Bangkok after a heavy night on the alcohol so i took his word for it. We went to a Swedish bakery for a pizza, this being the first pizza i have had since Australia it went down a treat. It cost me 38,000 Kip (GBP3.8) a little pricy but the taste of cheese and the general richness of it was much worth it.
We wondered about the town which i really wasn’t a fan of. Everything is very communist, the promenade has possibility of being great but its just grey, square, makes you feel small and in general very uninspiring, just how i imagine communism to be. It was a public holiday in Laos today and the promenade was full of people and children laughing and playing, to me it looked more like a pro communism propaganda film except i was living in it.
I had enough and went to bed, Vientine only has a population of 220,000 so the city isn’t very big and you frequently see the same people over and over again, its like everyone is on a loop but in fact there is nowhere to go, its just grey dull and uninteresting.
The next day after and uncomfortable night on the floor there was much to do, washing, a bike shop was to hunted down and it was Russells last day as tomorrow early in the morning he flies to Japan. I’m going to miss the bugger, its been great to have someone to laugh joke and just talk crap with, riding on will be strange at first, we have this strange joke going where whenever we see a dog, a cat or a picture of the king of Thailand we’d shout it out, when he’s gone it’s just me who plays.
We got the things we intended to do done, i serviced the bike and got a few bits and bobs, it was an expensive day but i wasn’t too bothered. I was already fed up with Laos, the people just rip you off for anything, for example buying a fruit juice it said 5000 kip upon paying it was 6000kip, why, because oranges are more exotic, another example is the hotel we are staying in, getting back they decided our bikes could be charged so they said we had to pay 5000kip per bike per night, i began to argue but Russell stepped in and said Loon would pay in the morning, Russ will be gone but me and Loon will have to make a quick getaway, Russell then was made to sign a bill, to which he sign ‘Adolf Hitler.’ Capital cities are never the place to judge a country but i am already looking forward to getting out of Laos to which my opinion is set as a money grabbing place where people will just penny pinch, i bloody hate that, there is no honour in it.
